Long Island homeowners of Suffolk County are now correcting the previous practice of burying home heating oil tanks underground. The resulting rusted and rotted tanks leak their contents into the surrounding soil and ground water, creating an environmental disaster. Rather than suffer the expense and property damage of excavating the underground oil tank, homeowners have an alternative in sand and foam abandonment, safe and legal methods to fill existing in-ground oil tanks. Not only are sand and foam abandonment much less costly than excavation, but they are also friendlier to your home’s landscaping. Homeowners are able to leave their oil tanks in the ground, empty the tanks of oil, and then fill the tanks with sand or foam, making it impossible to use the tank while simultaneously protecting the surrounding soil and water per Suffolk County regulations.
We’re a Local Small Business in Suffolk County
Our company provides both sand and foam underground tank abandonment to Suffolk County homeowners. We neither subcontract our abandonment work, nor do we subcontract our tank installations. While there is talk that sand and foam abandonment may be outlawed in the future, both will be legally grandfathered for homeowners who have already implemented the practice.
The abandonment process is best suited for warm weather months, April through September. We offer fast, one-day tank service. Please contact our company to speak directly to our staff about your oil tank abandonment options.
Certificate of Abandonment
Our company provides a tank abandonment certificate proving your oil tank has been properly abandoned in case you ever need to sell your home. Your certificate of abandonment proves you have legally and responsibly abandoned your underground oil tank.
Sand-Based Oil Tank Abandonment
Most Suffolk County tanks with less than an 1,100 gallon capacity can be abandoned with sand, and in some areas, sand abandonment is necessary. Our company first excavates your underground oil tank and cuts the top of the tank open. After we use a licensed waste oil truck to vacuum out the remaining oil, water, and sludge from your tank, we then enter the tank to wash the walls and the bottom of the tank of remaining oil.
After filling the clean and empty tank with sand, our technicians backfill the excavated site, remove venting and piping attached to the tank, and permanently close the pipe openings with cement, making your underground oil tank unusable.
Foam-Based Oil Tank Abandonment
Our tri-polymer foam completely and permanently fills existing in-ground oil tanks. Our company can abandon any size underground oil tank with foam. We vacuum remaining oil, water, and sludge from the oil tank and then dry out residual oil. After we fill your empty oil tank with specialty foam, we remove the vents and pipes and then fill the remaining openings with cement, permanently ensuring your underground oil tank unusable.
